First and foremost, a new Game N Chill went live today so if you'd like to enjoy some of this rambling in a video form, you're in luck...
General:
For everyone, else...
Past couple weeks have not really felt too constructive in general. Having quite the combo of mental and physical obstacles knocking down my time and energy for my more creative hobbies. Haven't really been doing too much work with the fan game projects because of that... have at least had enough energy to work on videos, considering I've made, uploaded and scheduled all my content for the month and then some.
So hopefully now I don't get to worry about that, I'll be able to invest more time back into those projects and actually make good enough pace that I feel ready to share progress that I've made. Don't want to make any promises until I'm sure I'm feeling physically better, but that's the plan. I'd love to fully get back into the swing of all that now, especially since I actually worked on Sweet Expedition for the first time all week, but I got a family event to attend later today so I don't think I'm really going to get to sit down and get back to working on it until later this week.
Golden Sun projects:
So when the 21st year anniversary of Golden Sun just snuck up on me. It kind of gave me the inspiration to fiddle around a bit with a project that I technically started before the Paper Mario Game Jam but got put on the wayside with how busy June/July got between the work I was doing for both the Paper Mario Game Jam and Lost Age's 20th anniversary.
It's an idea to try and rework Golden Sun's summoning system in a way that was new, yet balanced. This started as just an experimentation of how much I could get away with in the editor, but I'm thinking I could use some ideas from this to fix some balancing concerns I had with summons in Dawn of Djinn. In fact, if I can figure out a way to make it balanced enough, I'd love to release a standalone patch of just this new summon system.
I do want to keep the majority of my modding focus on Sweet Expedition until it's more finished. So I doubt I'll really get deep into Dawn of Djinn version 2 any time soon. But I'm sure I'll be tempted to mess around with Golden Sun every now and then whenever I get too frustrated with Paper Mario modding, so who knows exactly how long that wait will be....
Paper Mario projects:
Haven't had too much progress with Sweet Expedition lately because of everything else. Today and last Saturday were probably the two days of those entire two weeks I've felt up to working on it. Hopefully though I'll start feeling better and take advantage of the fact I'm so far ahead in videos to get back into the swing of things.
Don't think I have the time today to record clips of anything new, but just some examples of things I've worked on in the few times I've sat down to work on it include, some simple puzzles to give Kooper validation on the overworld and studying the code of Chet Rippo and Starlow to create a similar system on "Glace Island".
I'm trying to customize one of the existing NPCs into someone you can swap Star Pieces with. So far, I've got it working so you can give them a Star Piece for 50 coins, or Star Candies as I think they'll be referred to as in Sweet Expedition. It's better than nothing, but I still want to get it working that you can get badges and items in exchange, even if have to settle for a more Chet Rippo system rather than a full fledge Star Piece shop.
Oh, also I spent a little time fiddling around with one of the new party members. Some of the feedback I got from the Game Jam release mention that 5 different elements to swap between was a bit overwhelming. I was hoping to get around this by incorporating a way to swap between all the elements in a single move... ...but the more I mess around with it, the more I think that is beyond my scope, if possible, at all, so for now, I reluctantly nerfed down the different elements the party member can use to 3. Maybe someday I'll find a better way to implement the full idea, or even change my mind. But for now, I think 3 is a fair compromise between creating a flexible party member who's uses can change on the fly without being overwhelming. Plus I'm working on a move I wanted to implement in the Game Jam release that I didn't have the time to finish to make better use out of the party member's elemental swapping gimmick.
I think I'll share some quick WIP clips I have already saved on my channel, though people coming to this blog from Discord will have probably seen the majority of these already...
First clip is addressing an oversight of missing out on rewards from NPCs if you had too many items...
Messing around with code to make more save blocks for more forgiving battles...
WIP on the character icons for the new party members...
WIP Star Candy NPC...
